Forest and Wildlife Resource

Wallaggaa is one of the areas covered with extensive natural forests in Oromia. Historically, large natural forest area of the country and forest under OFWE is found in western part of the country including wallagga branch. From time immemorial, the community around the forest use forest products for different purposes, which include construction, as source of biomass energy, traditional medicines and many other livelihood options. Most of the forests under Wallaggaa branch are located Dhidhesa –Dabus basin, the major basin that contributes the lion’s share of the water volume to the Blue Nile.

The current total forest area under Wallaggaa branch is 576,000 hectares, which includes 7,039 hectares of lowland bamboo, 67,950 hectares of wildlife protected area, 560,309 hectares of natural forest comprising gum and incense trees. These forests are home to diverse wildlife such as buffalo, lion, tiger, rhino, pigs, birds, baboons and others. Tullu Lafto Sanctuary and Dhati Welal national park are few of the areas designated as wildlife protected area within the branch’s jurisdiction.

Animals nature

The animals of the forest have their shy way, yet the bark of the trees tells tales of bears hunting for grubs. In the gay canopy of foliage is the song of so many birds, a medley of diversity, the feathered souls of creation’s song. In the earth are the prints of their feet, a story told in mud of their gentle ambling days. And so here in the forest I am quite alone and yet in fine company indeed. After all, where else but the forest can we walk through a living masterpiece?
